Comme vous l'avez lu, le but est simple, faire disparaître le
plus de "liens brisés" d'AltaVista. Pourquoi AltaVista en particulier?
Deux raisons:

C'est le moteur de recherche à fonctionnement automatique (les sites
soumis sont visités par des "spiders" et non des êtres humains)
le plus populaire du Web.

Son mécanisme de suppression de sites plus fonctionnels est le plus
simple du Web.
Le fonctionnement est simple; le "spider" d'AltaVista est un programme
qui ne vérifie pas constemment les nombreux millions de liens disponibles
sur AltaVista; il vérifie seulement les sites qui lui sont soumis.
Comme un site ne s'ajoute pas automatiquement à AltaVista sans que
quelqu'un ne le soumette au "spider", un site ne s'enlève pas automatiquement
d'AltaVista sans que quelqu'un ne le soumette au "spider". Voici où
AltaVista se démarque en simplicité: il y a une seule zone
de texte pour entrer une adresse, peu importe que notre intention soit
d'ajouter ou supprimer une page Web de l'index, pas de nom d'utilisateur,
pas de mot de passe, absolument rien d'autre. Vous allez à http://www.altavista.com/cgi-bin/query?pg=addurl#form

, cliquez sur "Add a URL" au bas de la page puis cliquez sur le bouton
"Submit" pour l'index AltaVista seulement et non AltaVista/LookSmart),
vous y collez l'adresse de la page Web que vous avez trouvé sur
AltaVista qui n'existe plus ou requiert des privilèges particuliers
pour entrer, vous cliquez sur "Submit" et, si l'adresse n'était
effectivement plus valide, AltaVista vous dira que la page que vous avez
soumise sera enlevée de l'index AltaVista au cours de la prochaine
semaine. Vous serez fiers de vous, vous aurez fait un bon coup!
La meilleure chose à faire est de copier l'adresse qui apparaît
en petit, en gris, au bas de chaque résultat de recherche et de
la coller dans la zone de texte de la page de soumission si on a vérifié
que cette adresse n'est plus valide. Maintenant, allez-y! Si possible,
j'apprécierais que vous comptiez le nombre de mauvais liens qui
disparaîtront dans les prochains jours grâce à vous
et que vous l'envoyiez par courriel à powhertz@email.com,
ainsi je pourrai faire un grand total de l'opération le 1er octobre.
De mon côté, au moment d'écrire ces lignes, j'en ai
déjà 8, dont celui qui sortait 4e quand on recherche "Nirvana".

As you read, the goal is simple, remove the most broken links possible
from AltaVista. Why AltaVista? Two reasons:

It's the most popular search engine using automatic indexing (the sites
submitted are visited by "spiders" instead of human beings).

It's deletion mecanism for broken links is the simplest of the Web.
It's simple; the AltaVista "spider" is a program that is not always revisiting
AltaVista's hundreds of millions of links; it only checks the sites that
are submitted to it. As a site is not automatically added to AltaVista
without someone submits it to the "spider", a site is not automaticaly
removed from AltaVista without someone wubmits it to the "spider". Here's
why AltaVista is so simple: there is only one single textbox to submit
an address, no matter if the intention is to add or delete a site from
the index, no user name, no password, absolutely nothing else. You just
go to http://www.altavista.com/cgi-bin/query?pg=addurl#form
(or you go to www.altavista.com
, click on "Add a URL" at the bottom of the screen and then click on the
"Submit" button for the AltaVista index only and not AltaVista/LookSmart),
there you paste the address of the broken-linked page you found that doesn't
exist anymore or require permissions to enter, you click on "Submit" and,
if the address was indeed no longer valid, AltaVista will tell you that
the page you submitted will be removed from the AltaVista index within
a week. You'll be proud of yourself, and you'll have made a good action!
The best thing to do is to copy the address that appears in small, grey,
at the bottom of each search result and to paste it in the textbox of the
submission page after being sure that the address is no longer valid. Now,
let's go! If possible, I would appreciate that you count the number of
bad links that will be removed within the next few days because of you
and e-mail that to powhertz@email.com,
then I'll be able to make the grand total of the opération October
1st. From my end, while writing those lines, I already did 8, including
