Released in mid-May, this first REAL single from the album We are not Your Kind (All Out Life, released last year, was supposed to be the first single, but the band caused a major surprise by finally not including it on the album!) has largely met the very high expectations. I liked it right away, but not at the level it deserved. At first sight, it was mostly reminding me of Sulfur, the fourth single from their album All Hope is Gone (album: 2008;  Sulfur single: 2009), a very respectable song but certainly not in the top 10 of the most memorable in their career. It took me 2 months listening to it regularly before understanding all the details and all the genie of this little masterpiece that first seemed to somewhat lack of originality. It is not that much of a great composition, but this band with 25 years of experience has so much reached the apogee of its maturity, that it manages to exploit it in a masterful way to make a huge result out of it. The arrangements are fabulous, the musicians execute their work perfectly, and the voice of singer Corey Taylor reaches new heights again, showing a control and mastering as much in the clean as in the screams, and in the transitions in between. As for the lyrics, they are very personal (of a Corey Taylor abused in his youth, to put you in context) and very well written.

On top of that, my young kids have completely hooked on the song and the music video, which is mostly a pretex to show us their new masks! Still while writing these words today, in February 2020, they are still regularly requesting Unsainted, their favorite song from Slipknot. I must admit that it is a mix of pleasure and pride to share these moments with my kids, privileged people who'll have had the chance from a very young age to be exposed to an extremely large music diversity, including great tracks hardly accessible for the ears of a big part of the population. I think that young kids are open to be stimulated by music that is much more complex than nursery rhymes or candy pop, and that too many parents shut some doors that are giving access to brain stimulations on the grounds that they are only kids. With its excessively catchy chorus, Unsainted seem to be a good entry point to metal for a young public thirsty for discoveries.

That was my own little "favorite" from the album. When Fall came in, my top 2 of the year had become almost untouchable, and I told myself that the only song that would have any chance to beat Slipknot for my #2 would be... another song from Slipknot ! After as much as 2 months at #1 of satellite radio station Liquid Metal and 4.6 million views of a mere still image as the official video on YouTube, they FINALLY decided to officially launch Nero Forte as the 3rd real single from We are not your Kind in October (therefore making it elligible to my personal annual chart), with a very late official music video on December 16th. I was really happy! It settling without any doubt my the composition of my top 3, although the order between Unsainted and Nero Forte was remaining a big subject for reflection: the "best" (the most thorough), or my own little beloved one? I've had enough time to wonder about this, and my final decision is the one you know. It was a nice problem; I prefer by far this kind of dilemma because competition at the top is too strong, than the dilemma of chooseing a #2 among multiple songs that would deserve a #5-6 in some bad years.

Nero Forte is more experimental and unique than Unsainted. Consequently, it is not for everyone, as shown by the huge gap between its performance on Liquid Metal (more niched) and on the Billboard charts (more general), where it progresses with baby steps on the "mainstream rock tracks" chart. It's greatest strength is certainly its rythms. An exceptionnally rythmed flow from Corey Taylor in the choruses, clearly inspired by rap while remaining true to Slipknot's identity and without that we find that it really sounds like rap. From 2:56 until the end, an highly exciting drumming rythm with its unique signature. In both cases (singing from the choruses and drumming), it took me a lot of practice to get to faithfully reproduce them by myself! Those are rythms that are so different from what I'm used to hear, it's been very stimulating to me.

It is dumb, but my favorite moment is at 2:30 when Corey stretches his "Toooooo much animosity"! It is harmless, but I hooked on this! And obviously, when the famous "signature" drumming rythm imposes 2:56.

Slipknot, anthology metal tracks, THAT'S WHAT YOU DO BEST, THAT'S WHAT YOU DO BEEEEEEST !!

After a 13 years wait, all hard rock fans (metal or not) could not believe what they saw come in front of their eyes, on August 7th, the enigmatic first single from the mythic new album of Tool! I don't know what effect it had on the other streaming platforms, but I can witness that it was an incredible buzz on YouTube! Despite visually offering only a still image (no official music video, not even a lyrics video!), the video for Fear Inoculum has reached #1 of YouTube's trendings right on its first day! Even more than that: propelled by this single, the album from the same name has dislodged big pop star Taylor Swift from #1 of album sales in the United States of America on the 2nd week of Swift's album, causing shock and hate amongst her young fans! Now that's a unique phenomenon in the world of metal! But is it truly metal? It is much more a modern variant of progressive rock than metal, at least in the first 8:46 of this 10:22 marathon. Actually, it is in the rock category that the Grammys nominated Fear Inoculum, unlike their other track 7empest which was nominated in the metal category (and won the trophy, which the drummer and bassist went to accept on stage, singer Maynard not even being present for such a big event). Does that make that track more accessible to the public? Not necessarly. At least, not for radios, which were not offered a radio edit of that track and which did not know what to do with this cumbersome single that requires the airtime of three normal singles! It is very certainly the reason for which we did not hear it more on the radio.

My first impression was mixed. On one hand, I would have taken something heavier, more mordant. On the other hand, never listening to a 10-minute track has felt so short! There is no useless lengths, it is a fluid development and progression, absolutely justified. So much depth, we find new elements each time we listen to it. My greatest revelation would probably be the last 20 seconds, which I initially perceived like a disappointing copy of the finale of their classic Forty Six & 2 (1996) and which finally has, after many spins, so much more depth!

A very successful comeback for the Americans of Tool. Not catchy enough to be a serious threat for my top 3, but I spent very pleasing moments listening to it.

Greetings to my friends Arash and Hugues, grand Tool fans who were finally rewarded in 2019 after such a long wait!

Chester Bennington's testament! It was most likely our last chance to hear new material from the late Linkin Park and Stone Temple Pilots singer, it is a very good vocal performance and a very good track at once, how come did it have a hard time breaking the charts and ceil at only 3 million views on YouTube?! Very hard to understand! Anyhow, Lamb of God's guitarist had flair to team up with one of the most iconic voices of his generation, just months before his death. It is a very successful collaboration that came very close to my top 10, getting surpassed in the very last moments by La Mèche est Courte and GG6.

This third single from the album of the same name, released last year, is clearly my favorite. Excellent guitar riff and voice harmony as we are allowed to expect from these grunge legends.

I joined 2 videos to the playlist, because the sound is much better in the lyric video than in the funny official music video. I propose you to watch at least once the video, but after that the lyric video will be better for listening to the song.

Immature a little bit, but we well recognize the craziness of System of a Down, and that helps us forget the fact that we may never have any new material from the legendary band and that the songs Daron Malakian was writing with SOAD in mind will now pass into his secondary project, Scars on Broadway. I really liked Angry Guru, even more than Lives, the 1st single released last year for the Dictator album.

Released on the radio in December 2018, I heard it several times during the eligibility period for 2018, without hooking on it. I got very close to write it in my 2018 chart and place it around #62-63, and I decided on the last moment to report it to 2019, where it would be better evaluated to its full value. Excellent decision, because it is only in February, after my deadline, that I started to really like it. A pop rock track that reminds me a lot Footsteps, my #4 of 2015, built about the same way (although I continue to think the latter was superior), where it's much more the layering of the various voices than the guitars that make its power. A rock song I could recommend to almost anybody. The lyrics have as much of a hook as the music: "It's our time to shoot the stars, we ain't gonna stop 'til the world is ours".

I was haunted by this deathcore piece, a bit like the sound of a ghost in a dismal place! It is a total success: the intro, the melody, the performance from the musicians, the harmony between man and woman voices, all the "decoration" in periphery of the base instruments, are all strong elements.

Wow! A deathcore music diamond! Comments from the million people who watched its music video on YouTube are unanimous: this track is a luminary of its genre. Lorna Shore is not a new band, but it is its first album with its new singer, CJ McCreery, and that really seems to give them an edge. But not for long. During the Holiday season, less than a month after the release of this first single from their new album, the band fired its new singer because of allegations of sexual misconduct towards multiple women. A consecration that lasted no more than a few weeks!! If, like me, you are able to do the separation of concerns between the body of work and the individual, enjoy this song which, had it been released earlier in the year, would have certainly had potential for my top 20.

Retour inattendu d'un groupe thrash métal des années '80, dont le dernier album studio remontait à 1992 !! Avec un nouveau batteur et un nouveau bassiste, mais tout de même ! Ils ont beau être rendus un peu vieux, ils ne le laissent pas paraître dans leur musique ! Quel morceau extrêmement vif, fougueux, irrévérencieux, rapide et entraînant ! Wow !

Mark Tremonti est un grand habitué de mes décomptes annuels, que ce soit pour son travail avec Creed, Alter Bridge ou Tremonti. Je crois que Throw Them to the Lions est dans le top 2 de mes chansons préférées de son ère post-Creed. Pas sa pièce la plus technique, mais elle est particulièrement entraînante.

Autant j'avais aimé la pièce qui les avait fait connaître en 2014, This is the Time, autant je n'ai rien aimé de tout ce qu'ils ont sorti par la suite, atteignant souvent même le point de l'irritation ! C'est donc un grand retour pour ce groupe américain, qui m'a surpris avec cet efficace extrait, un certain retour aux sources mais dans une version plus agressive et légèrement améliorée à certains égards. Vidéoclip violent, mais qui passe très bien son message politico-social.

Parmi les 4 gros albums métal les plus attendus de l'année (Tool, Rammstein, Slipknot, Korn), c'est clair comme de l'eau de roche que c'est Korn qui a été le moins convaincant, pour l'album (The Nothing) comme pour son premier extrait (You'll Never Find Me). D'ailleurs, les 3 autres albums forment rien de moins que le top 3 de la DÉCENNIE du magazine Metal Hammer, et ne cherchez pas The Nothing dans ce décompte. Ils ont aimé l'album, mais pas au niveau d'un des meilleurs de la décennie. N'empêche, cet album et cette chanson portent l'empreinte bien spéciale du décès de la femme du chanteur Jonathan Davis, et on ressent bien cette émotion de la bouche de Jon lorsqu'il entonne ses "I'm lost", ou la finale presque épeurante où il répète ses mélancoliques "I'm not doing fine". À défaut d'être une des meilleures globalement, c'est une des chansons les plus chargées d'émotion de leur brillante carrière de 13 albums en 25 ans.

Pas de surprise, juste une satisfaction ! Les petits "No more, no more" de la fin des refrains deviennent accrocheurs, à la longue.

Morceau très mature du groupe américain de rock/métal chrétien. Très bien monté, avec une judicieuse intégration de l'orchestre à cordes.

Je ne l'ai pas aimée du premier coup, à la mi-septembre. Tellement trop simpliste, en plus d'avoir un gros côté immature. Ça ressemblait un peu à une mauvaise chanson de Weezer ! Mais par la fin octobre, son côté pop accrocheur et un peu cocasse avaient fini par me convertir ! Ça ressemble autant à du Weezer qu'à du vieux Puddle of Mudd, mais du BON Weezer !

Définitivement une bonne chanson. Son défaut est son manque d'originalité, ce son ayant été rafraîchissant il y a 5-6 ans, mais plus aujourd'hui. Il me fait penser au son de quelques autres groupes américains, notamment Gemini Syndrome. Jouée à outrance (trop) à la station de radio satellite Octane, ce qui lui a sûrement nuit plutôt que de l'aider, en fait.

Je craignais que cette chanson en solo du chanteur de Creed soit une insipide production ultra commerciale servant juste à mettre en valeur "le beau mec", mais ce n'est pas le cas ! C'est réellement une bonne chanson, et il n'a pas censuré les guitares pour maximiser son temps d'antenne dans les radios pop commerciales.

Ouf ! La honteuse carrière solo du chanteur Andy Biersack n'augurait rien de bon pour Black Veil Brides, mais The Vengeance fait une déclaration claire que le vrai BVB n'est pas mort, et même en grande forme ! Elle compte parmi mes préférées du groupe, malgré les "Oh Oh Oh, Oh Uh Oh Oh" du refrain, à la limite du rock "quétaine" des années '80 ! Arrivée tard dans l'année, elle aurait peut-être mérité un encore meilleur sort.

J'aurais préféré qu'Idiosyncracy soit le deuxième extrait choisi, mais Cold n'est pas mal non plus. Très lourd, en tout cas, sauf les refrains "bipolaires" avec des voix douces, mélodieuses et très accrocheuses, mais une musique quasiment sur "pause" !

Groupe américain d'un metalcore au son très moderne, découvert en août grâce à YouTube ! Eye of God n'a pas bien réussi à m'accrocher et rester dans ma tête, mais j'ai toujours eu du très bon temps en l'écoutant.

Un premier album en 23 ans pour ce légendaire groupe métal américain, qui en est évidemment à sa première apparition dans mes décomptes annuels qui ont 22 ans, mais qui a déjà vu une reprise (par Kataklysm) de sa chanson The American Way atteindre mon #42 en 2014. Pièce métal à l'ancienne, sans compromis, que j'ai aimée rapidement mais dont je me suis un peu lassé aussi avec le temps.

Mon plus gros cas d'amour-haine cette année ! À mes premières écoutes, je n'aurais jamais pensé qu'elle se retrouverait dans mon décompte personnel à la fin de l'année. La pièce est un peu violente, mais que dire du vidéoclip ! Je ne suis pas facilement choqué en général, mais là, je peux dire que j'ai été scandalisé par un niveau de violence aussi extrême et inutile. Les semaines ont passé, et les riffs de guitare des couplets et des refrains ont fait leur chemin dans ma tête. La batterie demeure également un gros élément fort, comme toujours avec Slipknot. C'est surtout lorsque je me suis procuré l'album We Are Not Your Kind que cette position dans mon décompte s'est consolidée. Cette pièce est clairement meilleure dans son rôle de fermeture de l'album que sans son rôle d'extrait radio. Elle confère à l'album une finale tellement dramatique, torturée, douloureuse... Je vous invite à écouter la chanson, mais je vous avertis, ne regardez surtout pas le vidéoclip si vous avez le coeur sensible ou devant des enfants !

Autre très bonne oeuvre rock alternatif à saveur blues de l'illustre Jack White. Ce #71 semble loin parce que son style ne tombe pas aussi bien dans mes cordes que d'autres, mais c'est très bon en son genre, et je l'aime.

Je la qualifierais de "metalcore mélancolique" ! Ou "emo metalcore" ! À défaut d'originalité, beaucoup d'émotion. Je me demande pourquoi ils ont mis autant de temps à sortir le vidéoclip, quasiment 6 mois après le vidéo des paroles sur YouTube ! C'est la raison pour laquelle le vidéoclip officiel de ce gros groupe américain n'a pas plus de visionnements.

Projet solo du talentueux batteur des Foo Fighters (et précédemment Alanis Morrissette). On la remarque davantage pour son ton cocasse que pour ses qualités musicales, mais c'est certain que le trio vocal de Taylor avec les légendes Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) et Perry Farrell (Jane's Addiction, Porno for Pyros) en fait automatiquement une incontournable avant même de l'avoir entendue !

Parlant de Perry Farrell ! Il a aussi sorti une chanson en solo, visiblement adressée au président américain Donald Trump sans le nommer. Une bonne petite chanson au son vraiment unique.

Absolument troublant ! Une chanson, et surtout un vidéoclip, sur le problème des armes à feu aux United States of America. Je n'aurais jamais cru qu'il y avait autant de tueries par armes à feu, ni que les États-Unis aient le plus gros ratio d'armes à feu par habitants au monde par une aussi grande marge. Merci Prophets of Rage pour cette prise de conscience !

Loin d'être à la hauteur de leur pièce Vervain qui leur a valu mon #35 l'an dernier, le duo américain mérite quand même une petite mention pour ce nouvel extrait. Même s'ils poussent un peu loin leur imitation de Kurt Cobain et Nirvana !

Rock plus traditionnel, bon dans son genre.

Une chanson inédite des sessions de l'album Throwing Copper (1994), qu'ils ont finalement décidé de sortir cette année, 25 ans plus tard ! On sent l'influence de cet album dans cette "nouvelle pas vraiment nouvelle" chanson.
